Fans have been clamoring for an HD remake of Final Fantasy VII since what seems like the dawn of time itself, and Square Enix has made various statements throughout the years alternately stifling and stoking our hopes.
Recently Square Enix President Yoichi Wada said that making a Final Fantasy VII remake would actually kill the Final Fantasy brand, something that Square Enix obviously wants to avoid.
He said, essentially, that they've yet to create a Final Fantasy game that surpassed VII, and that until they do they won't remake VII, because that would be like admitting defeat. That's apparently been their goal all along—to surpass VII's awesomeness.
Apparently FFXIII and FFXIV didn't cut it. We don't think anyone's arguing with that, actually.
So would you rather have them continue to try to one-up themselves, or simply admit that they no longer possess the capability to do so and remake Final Fantasy VII?
