Take this as nothing more than an internet rumor at the moment, but Geek Tyrant is reporting that Marvel/Disney might release Joss Whedon's 3-hour director's cut of Avengers into theaters this August. The move would help promote the upcoming Blu-Ray of the movie, which features a half-hour of deleted scenes, and it would push the film higher on the all-time box office chart. Currently it's at #3, behind Avatar and Titanic.
We certainly hope this is true, but we also have no idea what this extra half-hour of footage would actually bring to the movie. Would it make the alien invasion more interesting? Would we see more pithy banter between the heroes? Does Scarlett Johansson appear in a skimpy négligée at any point? We'll just have to wait and see.
