In a somewhat surprising development, Deadline is reporting that Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) has been tapped to direct and executive produce a TV series based on the femme fatale comic heroine, Barbarella. The character originally appeared in her own self-titled French comic book series in the early '60s before she came into the global spotlight as the subject of a feature film, which starred Jane Fonda.
The original film was produced by Dino De Laurentiis, and this new TV series will be produced by his widow, Martha. Barbarella has been pitched as a new series, so there is a chance that Refn won't be involved behind the camera after directing the initial pilot. The show is being put together by Gaumont International TV, but there is no network set for the series yet.
We'll have more information on this project as it moves forward.
