In a bit of a surprising turn, Google today announced a press event for next week to debut a new version of its Maps application. Promising to showcase "The next dimension of Google Maps," the event is expected to unveil a "3D" version of the popular service.

Set for June 6, Google has picked a date just five days before Apple's WWDC conference is set to kick off on June 11. The search giant could be attempting to steal Apple's thunder, since the iPhone maker is widely expected to debut a new version of Maps for iOS at the conference that ditches Google's software.

While we'll know more about what's in store in the coming days and weeks, one thing seems pretty clear already: for the consumer, maps are about to get a lot more interesting.
