Gary Carl Simmons Jr. will die by lethal injection today some 16 years after killing 21-year-old Jeffrey Wolfe. Simmons, a former grocery store butcher, used knives stolen from his job to dismember Wolfe, his drug dealer. He scattered Wolfe’s remains in a bayou inhabited by several alligators in 1996, probably hoping they’d eat the evidence.

Wolfe and his girlfriend journeyed from Houston to Mississippi to collect money that Simmons owed. Simmons didn’t have drugs or the money, but he and his accomplice, Timothy Milano did have a .22 caliber rifle which Milano used to kill Wolfe.

Simmon’s tied Wolfe’s girlfriend and threw her in a footlocker, then raped her saying her that her life depended on her sexual performance. She managed to escape and run to a neighbor’s house to call police.

Simmons was convicted of murder in August of 1996 and sentenced to death a year later. Milano got life in prison, and Simmons will meet his fate at Mississippi State Penitentiary around 6 p.m. local time today. Did they really think they’d get away with a crime this grisly?
