Developer MercurySteam doesn't plan on making any more Castlevania games after Lords of Shadow 2 and Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, according to Konami EU head of development Dave Cox.

"Well, I think it's about wanting to leave a legacy," Cox explained to VG247. "And I don't want to be in charge of a series that perhaps over a certain time is going to decline. I'd rather go out with a bang and leave that as our legacy in the Castlevania universe."

At the same time, the team accepts the fact that Konami won't stop making modern Castlevania games. If Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 exceeds expectations, Cox says they wouldn't have any problem passing on the license to a new team.

MercrurySteam may not want to become "Team Castlevania", but they apparently wouldn't have a problem making more Konami revivals. In fact, Cox says the team has a particular franchise in mind...

"I love Contra. I'd love to do Contra. At MercurySteam we've got an original idea that I think is really awesome. We'd love to bring that idea to market and I'm hoping that the success of Lords of Shadow 2 will allow us to do that."

Konami teased a Contra project back at E3 2011, but hasn't talked about it since. There's no reason to think that the project mentioned in 2011 has anything to do with MercurySteam, but the timing seems... coincidental.
