We can't say we weren't expecting it, but that doesn't make the news any less hard to handle: According to a new interview with the New York Times, Andy Samberg himself has more or less officially stated that he will be leaving Saturday Night Live. "It’s an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life ... Obviously it’s not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back."
Samberg mentions fellow departing cast member Kristen Wiig's decision to leave as part of what helped him decide, saying, "She kept saying it just feels like it’s her time. I connect with that. Something about it just feels like it’s the moment. My contract’s up and I did so much more than I ever thought I would ever even do."
At the very least, he does say that he hopes to and may occasionally come back with his Lonely Island buddies to contribute digital shorts or other sketches. So, there's that.
