Oddworld Inhabitants has announced that their upcoming remake of PS1 classic Abe's Oddysee has grown from simple HD re-release into a full-blown reboot. The team is starting with a blank canvas, making a modern game based on the original Oddysee.

“We are re-making Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, however we didn’t want the impression to be that we were just doing a port of the PSone title with higher res art,” according to Stewart Gilray, CEO of developer Just Add Water. “We are starting from scratch on this one, using the original as the blueprint for the game. So technically it’s not a new game, but a from-the-ground-up remake.”

According to Oddworld Inhabitants' Facebook page, the game is on schedule to come out in  summer of 2013. We'll be hearing much more about the game in the year between then and now, but the news is more than enough to make PSone-era gamers very excited.
