There's a bit of controversy brewing at Meridian Ranch Elementary School in Colorado Springs this week. Sean King, a white second-grade student, was forced to leave school because of wearing blackface to dress up like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for a project.

King and his parents are upset at the school, his mother expressing disbelief and sadness that the "principal and a faculty member [are] acting the way they are when they should be setting an example for the children," which actually makes no sense. The principal, however, deemed it offensive, in part because of the legacy of blackface, and also as a response to student complaints.

Yes, blackface is still bad. Why do Americans continue to need reminders about this?
