The long-rumored Freddie Mercury biopic starring Sacha Baron Cohen as the legendary Queen front man is finally picking up some momentum because Variety is reporting that Stephen Frears (The Queen) has emerged as the frontrunner to land the directing gig for the movie. This move makes sense because the movie's script was written by Peter Morgan, who worked with Frears on The Queen.

The movie is set to detail Mercury's rise to fame and culminate with Queen's legendary appearance at Live Aid in 1985. The film's production company, GK Films, also has to rights to Queen songs like "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You," and "We Are the Champions," so the movie will be able to feature the band's biggest hits, unlike some biopics.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but it at least sounds like the movie is on the right track to go before cameras eventually. We'll keep you updated when any more news on this project breaks.
