Director: Yung Chang
Screening date: Saturday, June 30, Open Road Rooftop (Lower East Side), 350 Grand Street, New York, NY 10002
Every film festival needs at least one powerful sports documentary—Yung Chang’s China Heavyweight is Rooftop’s, and it sounds like a technical knockout. In the wake of the Chinese government finally un-banning the sport of boxing, Chang’s all-access flick follows a former fighter turned trainer, Coach Qi Moxiang, whose class of teenage wannabe pugilists includes two boys with unique abilities. Setting the boxers’ coming-of-age experiences against a larger sociological backdrop, China Heavyweight seems like a larger-scale counterpart to this year’s Oscar-winning high school football doc Undefeated, which says a lot.
