Following a 13-1 vote on Wednesday, the Los Angeles City Council approved a ban on plastic bags. The power move will save taxpayer money for trash cleanup and improving the environment. This decision will make L.A. the largest city in the country to ban single-use plastic bags in retail stores.

The ban only faced opposition after concerns over cross contamination of raw meats and other groceries in re-usable bags that were not cleaned. City council has agreed to consider banning single-use paper bags in two years, so could the rest of the country follow suit?
