Early last year, Google unleashed its self-driving car on a closed obstacle course, with the vehicle making it through sufficiently. Now, it seems to be ready for the road, as the state of Nevada has issued the first driver’s license for a vehicle of its kind after testing it on public streets.

The state stipulates that two people are inside the car at all times—one in the driver’s seat as a back-up precaution and another monitoring the computer screen that generates the travel route—stops and hazards included—using GPS and a laser radar atop the car’s roof.
