54-year-old Randy Smith was not fucking around when he was seen roaming the streets of Fresno, Calif., on Saturday night with a Super Soaker that he had converted into a 20-gauge shotgun. In the past, authorities would’ve thought nothing of a grown man walking around with a water gun in tow, but with toy guns beginning to look alarmingly similar to actual weapons, police are taking notice.
After stopping Smith, they discovered he had made the apparatus into a deadly weapon with $30 worth of parts. In addition to being illegal, this conversion is also dangerous— the makeshift barrel on the weapon can explode into a shower of gunpowder and shrapnel.
Smith, who’s been in and out of prison since 1994, was arrested and released on Sunday.
