Last night's midnight screenings of The Avengers raked in an impressive $18.7 million, according to Deadline. The movie now has a cumulative worldwide gross of $322.7 million, and it looks to skyrocket from here now that it has been released in the States. Even though the midnight total is impressive, it failed to break the record and is currently the 8th highest midnight total. The overall midnight record is still Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part II's gross of $43.5 million.

However, Avengers did break the record for the midnight opening of a comic book movie, beating out 2008's The Dark Knight. Avengers' impressive debut stems from the fact that it is also playing on numerous 3D, IMAX, and IMAX 3D screens that have a higher ticket price than your average film. If you're planning on seeing it this weekend, we suggest you either go early in the morning or try to get tickets a day or two in advance.
