Party's over, Verizon subscribers. Like customers of AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile, you will now have to pay a fee to upgrade your phone, even when that upgrade is covered by your contract.

Verizon announced today that it will charge $30 for upgrades beginning April 22nd, saying it will use the fee to "continue to provide customers with the level of service and support they have come to expect, which includes Wireless Workshops, online educational tools, and consultations with experts who provide advice and guidance on devices that are more sophisticated than ever.”

Somehow we don't think any of that will be much consolation.

Cell carriers didn't use to charge fees for these kinds of upgrades, but as revenues have stagnated they've shown a willingness to give consumers the shakedown.
