One of the most intriguing aspects of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises is that we actually know very little about it. We know Catwoman and Bane will be the film’s villains, and that the movie will take place eight years after the events of The Dark Knight. That’s about it.

But as the movie draws closer, some new details have started to trickle out from the actors themselves. And in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tom Hardy, who plays the villainous Bane in the picture, gave some insight on the character and how he compares it to Heath Ledger’s award winning portrayal of The Joker.

“The Joker didn’t care—he just wanted to see the world burn, and he was a master of chaos and destruction, unscrupulous and crazy. Bane is not that guy,” says Hardy. “There is a very meticulous and calculated way about Bane. There is a huge orchestration of organization to his ambition. He is also a physical threat to Batman. There is nothing vague about Bane. No jokes. He’s a very clean, clear villain.”

It’s clear that Bane will represent a threat unlike anything that Nolan has delivered in these Batman films so far. He’s monstrous and imposing, but from what Hardy explained, he is also a tactician that can easily match wits with the Caped Crusader.

We’ll see just how formidable Bane is when The Dark Knight Rises opens on July 20.
