Spoiler Alert! The 50 Best Movie Twists

41. The entire film was just a made-up story told by the Baron.

Movie: The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988)
Writer: Terry Gilliam and Charles McKeown

Director/co-writer Terry Gilliam’s gonzo fantasy comedy The Adventures of Baron Munchausen was a box office failure back when it hit theaters in March of 1989. Apparently, moviegoers weren’t very interested in an 18th century adventure romp about real-life storyteller Munchausen’s goofy run-ins with giant sea monsters, Roman gods, mythological goddesses, and the Moon.

We’d imagine that viewers would’ve been plenty agitated to find out that all of the randomness and weirdness that they’ve watched was merely fiction dictated by the titular fabricator. Not that we’re salty about the film’s twist, though; in fact, it’s the rare this-was-all-bullshit reveal that feels right at home, rather than lazily dropped in for the fuck of it.
