The 100 Best Movies Of The Complex Decade

83. Cloverfield (2008)

Director: Matt Reeves
Stars: Michael Stahl-David, Odette Yustman, Mike Vogel, Jessica Lucas, Lizzy Caplan, T.J. Miller

We can't imagine what it'd be like to helplessly watch a behemoth creature decimate Manhattan, so who are we to berate the film's characters for being so damn grating? Besides, Hud (the wisecracking cameraman) does some amazing lens-work throughout for an amateur (major film flaw…overlooked). The monster is revealed gradually and with mere blink-and-you'll-miss-it glimpses, making it look cooler than what it actually is: an anorexic Godzilla.
