Nintendo will be unveiling a new Super Mario game for the Wii U as part of their lineup for the next-gen console at E3 this June, according to Eurogamer.

A Spanish newspaper, El Mundo, recently published an interview with Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, which claims that Nintendo plans to show a new Mario game for the Wii U at E3. The story does not quote Miyamoto directly on the issue.

The following passage is from the El Mundo report, as translated by Eurogamer Spain:

"[Miyamoto] advances that at the next E3, the biggest video games show, which is celebrated in Los Angeles in June, Nintendo will present a new Super Mario for this platform, in which you will combine the TV screen with the screen in the controller."

Since that report was published, Eurogamer claims to have confirmed the existence of a Super Mario game for the Wii U, which will be shown at E3 2012.

All of this information comes to light just after reports that Nintendo purchased the URL www.supermario4.com. So the question is: Are "Super Mario Bros Wii U" and Super Mario Bros 4 one and the same? The connection isn't a foregone conclusion: Nintendo is already working on a side-scrolling Mario game for the 3DS, which is expected to be released by the end of this fiscal year (April 1st, 2013).

We've reached out to Nintendo to confirm the report for ourselves, and we'll update you as more information becomes available.
