Since just about everyone has a cell phone these days, phone booths across NYC have been rendered useless for the most part. So, the city’s Department of Information Tech & Telecomm is kickstarting a program in which 32-inch, Internet-enabled touchscreens will replace 12,800 phone booths starting next month, offering restaurant and shopping listings as well as traffic alerts and directions. The devices will be free to use and readable in over 10 languages.
