Never, ever underestimate the flammable potential of the average mattress.
On Thursday night, an bus headed to Brooklyn from Staten Island ran over a twin-sized mattress near the Verrazano Bridge. After dragging the mattress over the bridge, one of its springs punctured the bus's gas tank. The driver managed to evacuate the bus without any injuries, but burning fuel spilled into the street, sending six parked cars up in flames.
FDNY got the situation under control within an hour, but the bus and cars were finished. One honest man expressed the empty feeling one gets while watching their prized vehicle become a charred memory, saying "It was a really bad feeling watching my BMW burn."
