Nintendo is Strengthening Digital Distribution For Future 3DS and Wii U Games

The Nintendo eShop will be a focus in the near future.

Nintendo told Joystiq today to announce that they'll be focusing more and more on their digital eShop as the 3DS continues to gain traction and the Wii U sees release later this year.

"Nintendo is aiming to significantly expand its digital business," the company's statement says, citing New Super Mario Bros. 2's upcoming simultaneous digital/retail release as an example. "The majority of Nintendo-published Nintendo 3DS games will have the same dual-distribution strategy.

"Likewise, the majority of Nintendo-published Wii U games will be available both as packaged products and as digital downloads starting on launch day," the statement continues.

Falling in line with Gamestop's recent and future efforts to sell more digital download codes in-store, Nintendo also says that future digital releases will be available at physical retailers—you buy the game, they hand you the 16-digit code.

Is digital really the way of the future? Will you buy Nintendo releases in stores or from the cloud? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter.
