Differentiating between the variations of Windows is not going to get any easier in the future. Microsoft today announced the different variants of its next major operating system, Windows 8, with the most surprising version being the one coined "Windows RT" which will only run on machines equipped with ARM processors.

The rest of the Windows 8 family—Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, and Windows 8 Enterprise—will run on x86 processor architecture (Intel and AMD processors) and will come installed on traditional computers (desktops, laptops) and will be available for purchase separately. Windows RT will only be available as a pre-installed OS.

Also different for Windows RT will be the types of applications allowed to run on it. While it will include its own Office suite, applications made for other versions of Windows 8 will not be compatible.

Let the retweet jokes being.
