Microsoft is producing a live-action Halo 4 web series which will air this fall in the months leading up to the game's release. Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn will air exclusive on Halo Waypoint and Machinima when it airs this fall.

Broken into five 15-minute episodes, the series will go all the way back to the beginning of the war between humans and the covenant, specifically detailing how Master Chief influenced a UNSC cadet, who will become "a leader" aboard the UNSC Infinity - A command ship that plays an important role in Halo 4.

According to Variety, the project is Microsoft's largest, most expensive forée into live-action entertainment to date. Microsoft feels that this series is the logical "next step" for the Halo franchise after the success of the live-action commercials for Halo: ODST and Halo: Reach.

Once upon time there were plans for a full-blown Halo movie, but the project was eventually cancelled because of logistical complications and strict production guidelines imposed by Microsoft. The web series allows Microsoft to retain the level of control they wanted for the film.

Halo 4 will kick off the new Halo trilogy on November 4th. Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn will air this fall.
