After sales of the HTC Rezound and Sensation XL weren't up to par with what the handset maker anticipated, HTC has decided to stop bundling its smartphones with Beats by Dre-branded headphones.

Speaking to CNET, HTC product executive Martin Fincher said, "An accessory like the headphone doesn't factor in when someone is buying a smartphone. If they want a Beats headphone, they'll buy it directly."

In August of last year the Chinese smartphone maker dropped around $300 million for a majority stake in the brand created Dr. Dre and Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine, and manufactured by Monster Cable. The deal allowed HTC to incorporate Beats sound technology into its handsets like the Rezound, which, according to Fincher, it will continue to do. Buyers will just no longer get free headphones.
