Back in November, the FBI arrested six hackers from Estonia. They set up a fake system of DNS servers—the protocol responsible for translating URLs into numerical codes read by computers—which redirected unsuspecting Windows users to fraudulent versions of any website. From ads on these sites, the hackers made at least $14 million.

At the time of the arrest, 568,000 users were accessing the fake DNS servers. This meant that if the FBI were to take down the servers, those users would be disconnected from the Internet. So, the FBI set up a network of clean servers, to allow Internet access to continue uninterrupted. With a cost of $87,000 per month, the FBI hoped to take down the servers by March, but a judge ordered it to keep them up until July.
