One of the biggest surprises that came from mainstream Hollywood last year was Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. It completely reinvented the franchise in a fresh, new way that had us wanting more right when the closing credits were finished rolling. And most of the success of the movie can be traced right back to the kinetic and exhilarating directing style of Brad Bird. He added some much needed flash, style, and ingenuity to a series that always felt a step behind modern action movies.

But in an interview with Crave, Bird had a devastating response when talking about his future on the series.

None

Just when the franchise got new life injected into it, Bird seems to have put it right back on a respirator. Sure there are plenty of directors out there that could do a serviceable job on a series like this, but Bird added something special to Ghost Protocol that made it rise above the norm.

The only silver lining here is that now Bird can become one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood. As disappointed as we are, we can’t wait to see what he does next.
