A Star is Born is set to undergo yet another remake as director Clint Eastwood attempts to inject new life into this well-worn story with Beyonce Knowles as the lead. The plot of the three previous versions of the movie followed an aging alcoholic star who takes a young female talent under his wing to fame and fortune. This latest take on the story will have a modern twist as Collider is reporting that screenwriter Will Fetters is taking his inspiration for the aging star from the late Nirvana front man, Kurt Cobain.
“I wanted to approach A Star is Born, when somebody mentioned it, I said, for me, the framework was if Kurt Cobain never got to go Unplugged and survived and it was 20 years later and it’s now and then he wanted to do that album, with that understanding that he was this grunge icon, that’d be tough to get done," Fetters said. "If he was past his prime and no longer someone, how does he get that album? The whole movie for me is this balance between art and commerce, which is when you first start in this business, you are smacked in the face with it.”
This is definitely a much different feel and tone than the previous versions of the film, and Fetters promises to tackle the ever-changing music industry itself in the movie.
“The music industry is changing. It’s harder to be a successful artist and to make money off of it, especially if you’re a dinosaur. If you’re a guy in your fifties, as an artist in a world of Justin Bieber. If you’re Kurt Cobain now in your fifties, what do you do? How do you exist in this world? To me, it was almost like this fish out of water situation,” Fetters added.
The site is also reporting that Warner Brothers is eyeing Tom Cruise to potentially take the role of the Cobain-esque rock star who aids Beyonce's character to glory. However, Fetters also warns that a lot can change about the script and direction of the movie before it hits cameras, so none of these details are set in stone quite yet.
