EA announced the winner of the Madden NFL '13 cover athlete contest at a press event in Times Square yesterday. In the end, Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson beat out Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton for the highest honor in video game sports.
The cover athlete was selected based on a 64-player bracket: The winners of each round, including the final match-up of Johnson and Newton was decided by public vote. 19.6 million votes were cast to help make the decision, spread out over the last seven weeks.
