The Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple's annual event for sharing and celebrating its hardware and software with developers, has been announced for June 11-15 this year. Tickets for the conference in San Francisco went on sale earlier today and promptly sold out within minutes.
In years past, Apple has used its opening keynote to announce new hardware like the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, but the company broke with that pattern last year when it held off announcing the iPhone 4S until October.
It's not clear what hardware news, if any, will be made at the keynote this year. In a statement today, Apple suggested the primary focus of the event would be software.
“We have a great WWDC planned this year and can’t wait to share the latest news about iOS and OS X Mountain Lion with developers,” said Senior Vice President of Marketing (and part-time hipster) Phil Schiller.
Apple will launch the latest version of its flagship operating system, OS X Mountain Lion, later this summer. In addition to a new iPhone, the company is also expected to release new Macs at somepoint this year.
