Mass Effect 3's ending seems doomed to go down as one of the most hated conclusions in the history of entertainment. Gamers have tried everything from donating to charity to sending BioWare poison cupcakes to get them to change it, and the jury is still out on what the developer plans to do.
Many feel the ending came out of nowhere and had little to do with the rest of the series, but an image from the first Mass Effect seems to suggest that the story was planned all along. The "beings of light" that were "created at the dawn of time to protect organic life from synthetic 'machine devils,'" coupled with the portrait of the shimmering figure, should be familiar to anyone who finished the trilogy.
Then again, it could have been the other way around—they couldn't decide where to take the ending, so they hearkened back to an obscure planet description from the first game for inspiration. After all, it's unlikely that they'd insert such important foreshadowing in such an unlikely place; only gamers who spent extra hours exploring every random planet in Mass Effect would ever find this.
