It doesn't make sense to us either, but we like it.

Deranged candy-makers, demon barbers, mad hatters— Johnny Depp expertise has always lied in darkly quirky characters, but this may be the actor's quirkiest yet.

In his new film, Depp takes on the role of Barnabas Collins, a 18th century womanizer cursed by a witch he romantically slighted to be buried alive as a vampire. When he finally escapes, it's 1972, and everything he knows has disappeared, except for that pesky witch, much to his chagrin. What follows is an awesomely campy Gothic humor, which sounds so crazy, it might actually work.

With a stellar cast that includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Chloe Moretz and the always-entertaining Helena Bonham Carter, all under Tim Burton's watch, our expectations for this genre mash-up are unusually high. Are you with us? Will you catch Depp's latest creepy invocation in theaters May 11, 2012, or are you still holding a grudge over the disappointment that was The Rum Diary?
