A new patent, uncovered by Patently Apple, reveals intricate details of Apple’s various designs for implementing 3-D imaging into both video and stills on the iPhone. The patent lists various technologies, such as infrared reflection, microlenses, and LIDAR sensors for improving depth perception and handling of polarized light.

Interestingly, the patent states that 3-D imaging can also be applied to facial and gesture recognition, including smiling, grimacing, etc., using surface geometry data of facial muscles.

3-D is always a very polarizing thing so let’s hope that if Apple does, in fact, ever introduce it into its devices, they keep to their usual standards.
