Legos and K’Nex are easily the coolest educational toys of all-time—they’re more or less everyone’s first design tools. And while they both exist in the same space of construction toys, they’ve never actually co-existed—you could never use your Lego Millennium Falcon on a K’Nex roller coaster. Until maybe now.
Design collectives F.A.T. Lab and Sy-Lab have created the Free Universal Construction Kit, an enormous collection of free adapters that can connect any combination of construction tools/toys imaginable, from Legos to Tinkertoys, and yes, even the og’s: Lincoln Logs.
Interestingly, the Kit doesn’t actually include any parts, only downloadable shapes designed to be processed by 3D printers into tangible pieces. By not actually manufacturing the adapters, F.A.T. Lab and Sy-Lab avoid any issues that would arise from copyright infringements. After all, the toy manufacturers would probably prefer to keep their products separate and in competition with one another, neglecting to consider the limitless possibilities of collaboration.
