When the iPhone finally launched on Sprint in October 2011, it broke the company’s one-day sales record. No numbers were given at the time, but after the nation’s third-largest wireless carrier announced the results of its previous quarter on Wednesday, we’re able to see just how popular the device was.

According to Sprint, it was able to move 1.8 million iPhones during the fourth quarter of 2011. That’s more than any other handset sold by the carrier. Even crazy is the amount that went to new subscribers. Sprint added 1.6 million new subscribers last quarter, 720,000 of them purchased an iPhone.

For those not following along, that means nearly half of all Sprint’s new accounts were activated for an Apple iPhone.

Sprint CEO, Dan Hesse, in a statement said, "Our strong fourth quarter performance illustrates the power of matching iconic devices like the iPhone with our simple, unlimited plans and industry-leading customer experience.”

Sprint isn’t the only carrier eating well thanks to the iPhone. Apple’s handset accounted for more than 80% of all new smartphone subscribers on AT&T, and more than half of Verizon’s.
