Between The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man both hitting theaters this summer, Joss Whedon’sThe Avengers has plenty of Spandex-clad competition to deal with over the next few months. And so far, all of the footage and images released for the movie have looked serviceable, if not slightly underwhelming. However, the new TV spot that aired during the Super Bowl let fans everywhere know that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes won’t be overshadowed by a millionaire in pointy ears or a teenager with sticky palms.
For the first time yet, The Avengers looks like the jaw-dropping blockbuster that we have all been waiting for. From tight aerial battles to some pretty gargantuan explosions, this short trailer perfectly captures the awe-inspiring might of these super-powered heroes. Unlike the realistic tone that Christopher Nolan has brought to the Batman franchise, over-the-top action scenes and CGI set pieces are a priority for Joss Whedon's vision. That's certainly a welcome change of pace for a comic book movie.
Aside from showing off some flashy sequences, the spot didn't spill the beans on the identity behind the alien race that attacks Earth during the movie. It looks like we might have to wait until opening day to find out who it is for sure. At least we got a good look at the Hulk swatting away enemy spaceships like they were mosquitoes. That alone makes this all worth it.
The Avengers hits theaters on May 4.
