In this summer's The Avengers, much like the Marvel Comics' character's previous big-screen incarnations, the Hulk will play his CGI-heavy, action-packed part in a glossy, expensive blockbuster. Which, in a way, belittles the green giant's inherent strength as a character: his pathos. Bruce Banner, the scientist unlucky enough to get mutated into the Hulk, doesn't want to live that way.

And that's the central theme of the infamous late '70s series The Incredible Hulk, a mostly humorless drama that burrowed into the comic book mainstay's psychological dilemmas. But, of course, also kicked much ass, thanks to muscleman Lou Ferrigno's Hulk.
