13. Miami Vice

Aired: September 28, 1984 - May 21, 1989 (NBC)
Theme Song: Jan Hammer "Miami Vice Theme"

Jan Hammer's big time electro score is fast, furious and flashy, a perfect fit for '80s fashion gurus/renegade detectives Rico and Tubbs who blended in nicely with the neon colors and stunning luxury living of South Beach as they hunted down bad guys. The popular track (it hit No. 1 on the charts and snagged a Grammy) is the definition of synthesizer shredding and very much a sound of the era, a much harder dance record than the usual club fare, similar to “Axel F” from the Eddie Murphy comedy Beverly Hills Cop and Herbie Hancock's “Rockit” on coke, if you will.
