15. Hill Street Blues

Aired: January 15, 1981 - May 12, 1987 (NBC)
Theme Song: Mike Post f/ Larry Carlton "The Theme From Hill Street Blues"

Most cop show themes opt for adrenaline-pumping music that reflects typical action like high-speed car chases and shoot-outs. Not Hill Street Blues, though. Written by prolific songwriter Mike Post, this mature and heartfelt composition, made for a TV series that was more interested in people's lives than bullets, echoes the daily grind of police work (i.e., those early morning roll calls and bothersome paperwork) and the commitment necessary to do a high-risk job in order to protect and serve. To quote Big Noyd on Mobb Deep's “Streets Raised Me”: “This is somethin' you feel, nigga, like the theme song from Hill Street Blues.”
