The corrupt cop has long been a fixture in film, thanks to the many crooked lawmen who've besmirched the badge in real life by accepting bribes, brutalizing suspects, and even committing murder. This Friday, the brotherhood of loathsome movie police gets a new member: Dave Brown (played by Woody Harrelson), an exceptionally dirty and bigoted LAPD officer whose corruption and brutality cause his world to crumble in writer-director Oren Moverman's new crime drama, Rampart. Inspired by Harrelson's breakneck portrayal of Brown's descent, we count down The 25 Most Despicable Cops In Movies.

Richard Chance (William Peterson) in "To Live and Die In L.A." (1985). He's not really a cop (secret service agent), but he blackmails an informant into giving him sexual advances, commits armed robbery, gets an undercover agent killed, and drives in the wrong lane of a busy L.A. freeway. All this just to get the counterfeiter (Willem Dafoe) who killed his partner.

How is Matt Dillon's Officer John Ryan higher than say, Casey Affleck in The Killer Inside Me when the former actually saves the life of one of the main characters in Crash?
