9. THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME FROM VARSITY BLUES (1999)

Before Friday Night Lights came out in 2004, Varsity Blues was seen as the ultimate movie about high school football. It dealt with the drama both on and off the field for these kids and the pressures they faced while playing big-time high school ball.

The championship game at the end is no different as the team has to battle back from behind and win the game during the last seconds—without the coach who the players have essentially mutinied against. It doesn’t stray from the formula too much, but Varsity Blues does give people a glimpse at the intense nature of amateur football, and the scrutiny that these players are under despite being just kids.
