Social Media, E-Mail More Addictive Than Smoking and Drinking

Virtual insanity.

According to a study by the University of Chicago, folks between the ages of 18 and 85 have the highest number of urges for sleep and leisure time. Right behind are urges for engaging social media and checking e-mail, substantially ahead of drinking and smoking.

The study required the 205 participants to list what urges came over them over the course of a whole week. Work also made the list, ahead of even drinking, which probably means Americans are overworked since sleep is our main concern.

As for our addition to technology, lead researcher Willhelm Hofmann reasoned, “Desires for media may be comparatively harder to resist because of their high availability and also because it feels like it does not ‘cost much’ to engage in these activities, even though one wants to resist.”
