Here in the States, people spend hours, even days, in line for the chance to drop hundreds on the shiniest of new gadgets (or sneakers). Over in Zhengzhou, China, folks line up by the thousands for the opportunity to produce those shiny gadgets. (No wonder our economy’s gone to shit.)

Foxconn is one of Apple’s biggest manufacturers and its Zhengzhou factory is ramping up production on the iPhone 5 by adding about 100,000 jobs. New employees can earn as much as 3200 Yuan—the equivalent of $506—a considerable figure given the region’s extremely low cost of living. Hence why lines outside the factories stretched 200 meters despite low temperatures.
