Illegal downloading in the gaming world is, as you might suspect, a serious issue. How serious, you ask? Download enthusiast site Torrentfreak created a list of the year's most pirated games. Actually, there are three lists: Each one has the 5 most illegally downloaded games for platform for the PC, Xbox 360, and Wii. There's no PS3 list because the number of downloads was "considerably less" than other platforms.

You'll be surprised to know that, while it was an FPS, the most pirated game of 2011 was not Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3.

It was Crysis 2.

Crysis 2 was illegally downloaded almost 4 million times in 2011 on the PC alone. (3.92 million copies, to be more precise.) The dynamic duo, MW3 and BF3, were right behind though, being grabbed 3.65 and 3.51 million times respectively. Rounding out the top 5 were FIFA '12 (3.39M) and Portal 2 (3.24M).

Though console the pirating numbers are lower, they are not insubstansial: On Xbox 360, Gears of War 3 got the top spot, with 890,000 downloads, followed by Modern Warfare 3, (830,000) Battlefield 3 (760,000) Forza 4 (720,000) and Kinect Sports: Season 2 (690,000).

The Wii actually had slightly higher piracy stats, surprisingly enough. Super Mario Galaxy 2, despite being a holdover from 2010, was pirated 1.37 million times last year. Mario Sports Mix was downloaded 1.09 million times. After that were Xenoblade Chronicles (950,000), Lego Pirates of the Caribbean (870,000), and FIFA 12 (860,000).
