Reddit, the social news site and programmer hangout averaging 2 billion pageviews monthly, will shut down on January 18th in protest of the controversially Big Brother-like Stop Internet Piracy Act (SOPA), from 8am to 8pm EST.
“Instead of the normal glorious, user-created chaos of reddit, we will be displaying a simple message about how the PIPA/SOPA legislation would shut down sites like reddit, link to resources to learn more, and suggest ways to take action,” site administrators wrote in a blog post.
Also, the site will play a webcast of that day’s Congressional hearing on the bill, at which Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian is scheduled to speak out.
