Interactivity has yet to be fully realized despite touchscreens and the likes of the Xbox Kinect, but the student-built Portal box brings us closer—inside, actually.

The box, resembling an old-school TV set, has a hole on its side—the “portal,” if you will—through which a person can reach inside the screen with any body part to physically interact with and adjust the on-screen environment. More impressively, connecting two Portal boxes via Internet can allow two people to interact within the same environment.

The brainchild of Art Center College of Design student Jayne Vidheechareon, the devices, she believes, can revolutionize online video chatting.
