Google Signs Up Samsung, LG For New Google TV Sets

Also re-teams with Sony.

After enduring a rocky 2011, Google TV is poised to make significant headway in 2012. The Internet giant has just announced several new partners for its web-enabled TV initiative, including Samsung and LG. Sony, who has already shipped its first line of Google TV-enabled televisions and Vizio, announced last year, also remain on board.

In an estimate that's perhaps a bit optimistic, Google Chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt predicted last month that by this summer 50 percent of all televisions sold in the US would have Google TV embedded. If it can get Sony, Samsung, Vizio and LG to ship this year, the company could be well on its way to such prominence.

All of which paints a very interesting picture of the landscape Apple's much-rumored "iTV" would be entering, to say the least.
