Gmail’s logo might seem a bit too business-to-business at times, but ultimately, it’s perfect, for both its faithfulness to the Google logo and simple brilliance with that “M.”

However, according to former Google designer Kevin Fox in response to a Quora query, Google’s Dennis Hwang designed the logo “literally the night before the product launched.” Yep, everyone procrastinates.

Fox and Google co-founder Sergey Brin watched over Hwang as he made it, initially using the same font as Google’s logo, Catull. However, due to Catull’s awkward “a,” Hwang used what’s believed to be Myriad Pro for “mail.”
