For audiophiles, there’s always vinyl to fit their hi-fi needs. For environmentalists, there’s now a sort of “tree vinyl.” As strange as it may sound, the new “Years” turntable by German audio engineer Bartholomaus Traubeck can produce music from actual trees.
Instead of a needle, the “Years” deck packs a tiny digital camera and light on the tonearm. Therefore, it reads LP-like slices of wood by scanning the tree rings for thickness, growth rate, texture, and color tone. Custom software then converts the data into playable piano notes.
